Favorite Android Apps

Posted December 8th, 2010 in Links by Rob

All the cool people(Linoge and JP) are talking about their android apps, so I had to list a few of my favorites:

Google Voice – When you have Google Voice set up properly, it can revolutionize the way you use the telephone.  Free voicemail transcription and text messaging capabilities are only the tip of the iceberg.

Listen – This application is my podcast player of choice.  It integrates with Google Reader to allow you to manage your podcast feeds from any browser.  A single click in the app will check all your feeds for updates and from there you can add them to the queue.  This makes listening to podcasts nearly as simple as listening to the radio.

USAA Mobile – Thanks to USAA, I haven’t visited a bank in years.  Not that I dislike the lollipops, but I have better ways to spend my time.  This app allows me to check balances and transactions, transfer funds, bay bills, file auto insurance claims, and even deposit checks with the phone’s camera(funds are available immediately).  It’s also handy that it allows you to remain logged in, requiring only a 4-digit PIN to access the app. I have been a USAA member for more than 15 years and recommend them highly.

Sleep Timer – A very simple app that will turn off another app in a set amount of time.  Other features include a audible signal shortly before the time is up, the ability to shake the phone to extend the timer by a preconfigured amount of time, and the ability to mute notifications and turn off wifi, bluetooth, and enter airplane mode.

Lastpass extension for Dolphin Browser – You must be a premium Lastpass subscriber($12/year), but it keeps me from having to enter ANY passwords manually(after you set up the app).  I also use the Chrome extension to manage passwords in the browser.  Absolutely worth the price.

Dolphin Browser – Required for the above extension

Google Reader – I am a reader addict.  There.  I said it.  Google Reader allows me to track thousands of articles and posts from hundreds of news outlets and blogs and sort through it all in less total time than the commercials from the evening news.  Google Reader’s mobile webpage wasn’t too bad, but the app is even simpler.

VPlayer Beta – Watch DIVX AVI files.  Enough said.

Angry Birds – Fling fowls to take out grunting pigs.  You know you want to.

AppBrain App Market – Manage your phone’s apps in the browser.

I had not heard of that Listen app before. Will have to check it out. I did not used to listen to podcasts but I find myself doing it more and more lately.

I tell you what, these toys are all too amazing in what they can accomplish from our pockets…

    Thanks for the linkage!
